Situated on the Kenyan-Ugandan border, Mount Elgon National Park is an extinct shield volcano  which last erupted about 2 million years ago.

A shield volcano is a type of volcano characterized by its broad, shield-like profile. Unlike the steep, conical shape of stratovolcanoes, shield volcanoes have gentle slopes formed by the flow of low-viscosity basaltic lava which over the millions of years breaks down to create extremely fertile soils.  Hence Mt Elgon is valued for it’s high quality arabica coffee and is a major food growing area. The base of Mt Elgon is 80km wide and features the largest mountain caldera in the world.  The name “Elgon” is believed to have originated from the Maasai word “Elgonyi” meaning breast, as it’s shape resembles that of a human breast.

The park covers 1,279km² surface area with the Ugandan section covering 1,110km² whilst the smaller Kenyan section covers 169km².

Local communities, such as the Bagisu tribe refer to the mountain as “Masaba” named after their founding father.

The Bamasaaba are believed to be one of the oldest Bantu tribes of Eastern Uganda. Originally they lived high up on the slopes of Mt Elgon to avoid being attacked by other tribes in the area. Mt Elgon was a name given by European explorers around 1898 however locally it was known as Masaba.

They say that a man called Mundu or Uzi whose ancestors migrated from the Ethiopian mountains where they may have been linked to the Ethiopian jews called Falashas via Lake Turkana & settled in the upper reaches of Mt Elgon above the caldera where game was plentiful and caves were many. It was from here that they lived from hunting but also ate bamboo shoots which were dried and smoked to preserve them as the shoots are seasonal from May to August.

Mundu had two sons, Masaba and Kundu and lived in a large cave at the base of Masaba Peak (Jackson’s Summit) @ 4,152 metres. Masaba was strong and became leader of the several hundred strong tribe and produced three sons, Mwambu, Mubuuya & Wanale plus two daughters, Natuyi and Seera.

The park has several trails however the Sasa Trail is the easiest, more developed with waterfalls, inspiring montane forests and stunning views. Originally the Sasa Trail was one trail up to Wagagai Peak and back, however in September 2023 Mr John Hunwick formally from Australia signed a concession with the Uganda Wildlife Authority to develop and operate the Sasa Trail. In doing so he created a new trail up the mountain coming down the old trail to make a loop but also to capture the beauty and stunning views along the Mukooka Ridge. The park entrance was also changed from the steep metal ladders ascending the Mudange Cliffs to a new trail passing under the 61 metre Nabunyifu Falls which is much easier with incredible views as far as Mbale city and beyond. The trail also passes over the outstanding Masaba Table @ 4,024 metres and passes directly below Masaba Summit providing a fantastic option for hikers to climb and get awesome views across the caldera.
