Ascend the Sasa Trail past a roaring 61-metre waterfall, through ancient montane forest to Hunwick's Camp at 2,882 metres — where sweeping views stretch all the way to Mbale city.
Overview
Our two-day trek is a truly amazing trekking experience, climbing up past the base of the 61-metre Dirigana Falls, continuing to the top of the falls and along the Dirigana River before ascending to the Mukoola Ridge — which has incredible views of the valleys and communities far below.
The best option is to have a pre-night stay in Mbale town, or at any lodge overlooking the mighty Sipi Falls. It is 52 km from Mbale to the Budadiri Uganda Wildlife Authority office — approximately one hour's drive. Be at UWA offices at 8:00 am for an early start.
All meals, guide, porter support, and accommodation at Hunwick's Camp (2,882 m) are included. There is cellular network at the camp, and on clear evenings you are treated to extraordinary views across the hills all the way to Mbale city.
Day by Day
Two days of adventure — ascending through waterfalls and ancient forest on Day 1, and a scenic river descent on Day 2.
The Two Day Trek takes you through the community then up alongside the Dirigana River, beneath towering cliffs and across the bridge directly below the 61-metre Nabunyifu Falls — an extraordinary experience as the mist surrounds you. You then climb up the escarpment into the montane forest above.
After a few kilometres you reach a scenic lunch spot nestled in a bend in the river, where you enjoy a hearty meal listening to the gentle flow of the water. From here it is a steady climb up to the Mukoola Ridge, arriving at Hunwick's Camp at 2,882 m with fantastic views of the communities below and across the hills to Mbale city.
After a hearty breakfast at camp, you continue climbing for one more kilometre through the forest before branching off and descending to the Dirigana River. The trail then follows the river closely, passing several rapids and small waterfalls — a completely different perspective of the mountain.
The descent trail meets the Day 1 route near the falls, where you retrace the lower section back past the 61-metre Nabunyifu Falls and down through the coffee farms and community to Basecamp. A perfect way to end a memorable two-day adventure.
