Two day Nature Walk to Hunwick’s Camp

Trekking the Sasa Trail in Mt Elgon National Park is a truly rewarding experience with professional guides, great food and good accommodation.

Overview;

Our Two Day trek is a truly amazing trekking experience climbing up past the base of a 61 meters high Dirigana Falls, then continue climbing up to the top of the falls and along the Dirigana River before ascending to the Mukoola Ridge which has incredible views of the valleys and communities below.

The best option is to have a pre-night stay in Mbale town, but also you can stay at any lodge overlooking the might Sipi falls. It is 52km from Mbale town to Budadiri Uganda Wildlife Authority office, taking approximately one hour drive from Mbale town. To get an early start be at UWA offices at 8:00am. The trek starts just above Bugiboni Village at Elgon Trekking Services basecamp.

2 DAYS NATURE WALK at $140 trekking fees plus $35 per night, National Park fees. TOTAL $175.

Brief  itinerary:

Day 1. At the basecamp 1,720m, Hike to Hunwick’s  Camp 2,882metres.

Day 2. Descend down to the basecamp

 

The Two Day Trek and Nature Walk takes you through the community then up alongside the Dirigana River beneath towering cliffs and across the bridge directly below the 61m Nabunyifu Falls which is an amazing experience. You then climb up the escarpment into the montane forest above.  After a few kilometres you find our lunch spot nestled in a bend in the river to enjoy a heathy lunch as you listen to the gentle flow of the river. From here it is a gentle climb up to the Mukoola Ridge to Hunwick’s Camp at 2, 882m with fantastic views of the communities below and across the hills to Mbale city. There is cellular network at Hunwick’s Camp.  

Overnight stay at: Hunwick’s Camp 2,882m.

Meal plan: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

After a hearty breakfast you continue climbing up through the forest for a kilometer before branching and walking down to the Dirigana River.  The trail follows closely to the river with several rapids and small waterfalls before meeting the day from day one where you then pass back down to base camp past the falls.
