Everything you need to know before your Mount Elgon trek — from trail conditions and permits to packing lists and wildlife.
We offer six guided routes on Mount Elgon, from beginner-friendly forest walks to full caldera expeditions:
All treks depart from Budadiri trailhead on the Ugandan side of the mountain.
The best seasons are the dry periods: December–February and June–August. Trails are firmer, caldera views are clearer, and temperatures on the high moorlands are more stable.
Mount Elgon can be trekked year-round — the forest is lush and green during wetter months, and the caldera is especially dramatic after light rain. Avoid the heaviest rain months (March–May, October–November) for summit treks.
Wagagai Peak at 4,321 metres (14,177 ft) is the highest point on Mount Elgon and the highest summit in Uganda. It is reached on the 3-day Wagagai & Masaba, 4-day Wagagai summit, and 5-day caldera traverse routes.
Mount Elgon's caldera is the largest ancient volcanic caldera in the world at roughly 40 km in diameter, making the landscape on the summit plateau truly unique.
Yes. The Suam hot springs sit inside the caldera near the Kenya-Uganda border at over 3,000 m elevation. They are the highlight of the 5-day caldera traverse and a genuinely rare experience — steaming geothermal pools in an ancient volcano above the clouds.
You can book through:
We recommend booking at least 2 weeks in advance for multi-day summit treks, especially during peak season. A deposit is required to confirm your reservation.
All prices are per person in USD. The base price covers guide, porters, all meals, and accommodation on multi-day treks. UWA park entry permits are added on top and paid to Uganda Wildlife Authority.

Yes. A Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) national park entry permit is required for all trekkers. Elgon Trekking Services arranges all UWA permits as part of your trek package — you do not need to apply separately.
Permit fees differ for foreign non-residents, East African residents, and Ugandan citizens. Current rates are included in our trek pricing.
All multi-day ETS packages include:
You only need to bring personal clothing, a sleeping bag, and water bottles.
We accept USD and UGX. Payment methods include cash, bank transfer, and mobile money (MTN/Airtel Uganda). Contact us to confirm payment details when booking.
Fitness requirements vary by route:
No technical climbing skills are required for any ETS route. If you can walk uphill for extended periods, you can summit Wagagai.
Mild symptoms — headache, fatigue, reduced appetite — are possible above 3,000 m. At Wagagai Peak (4,321 m) moderate altitude sickness can affect some trekkers.
The risk is significantly lower than on Kilimanjaro or Rwenzori because ETS routes ascend gradually. All ETS guides are trained to recognise and respond to altitude sickness. If severe symptoms develop, descent is the immediate protocol. Consult your doctor before trekking if you have heart or respiratory conditions.
Yes. Uganda Wildlife Authority regulations require all trekkers inside Mount Elgon National Park to be accompanied by a licensed guide. Elgon Trekking Services provides UWA-certified, experienced guides who know the trails, wildlife, and weather patterns intimately. Porter services are also available and strongly recommended on multi-day treks.
Mount Elgon National Park on the Ugandan side is considered safe for trekking. ETS operates with licensed guides and maintains close coordination with UWA rangers. Emergency evacuation protocols are in place for all treks. Trekkers should follow guide instructions, respect weather conditions, and stay on marked trails.

Essentials to bring:
ETS provides all camping equipment, meals, and porter services — you do not carry your own tent or cooking gear.
ETS uses established campsites at different altitude bands. Camps are equipped with quality tents, sleeping mats, a cook tent, and a dining shelter. Our experienced camp crew prepares hot meals each morning and evening. Toilet facilities are basic — long-drop latrines at some camps, cat-hole digging elsewhere (guides carry trowels and provide instruction).
Signal is available on the lower forest trails and at the Budadiri trailhead. Coverage becomes patchy above the forest line and is generally absent in the caldera and on the high moorlands. Inform family and friends of your itinerary before departure. ETS guides carry emergency communication devices on all multi-day treks.
Mount Elgon National Park hosts a remarkable variety of wildlife:
Yes — Mount Elgon is one of Uganda's premier birding destinations. With over 300 recorded species spanning forest, moorland, and afro-alpine zones, the mountain offers exceptional diversity. The endemic Elgon Francolin and Jackson's Francolin are the headline species. ETS offers dedicated birding treks with specialist guides.
