Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before your Mount Elgon trek — from trail conditions and permits to packing lists and wildlife.

What trekking routes does Elgon Trekking Services offer?

We offer six guided routes on Mount Elgon, from beginner-friendly forest walks to full caldera expeditions:

  • 1-day Forest Walk & Waterfall Trail — ideal for families and first-timers
  • 2-day Hunwick's Camp — overnight in the montane forest zone
  • 3-day Sasa Trail Nature Experience — rich wildlife and moorland scenery
  • 3-day Wagagai & Masaba — dual summit at 4,321 m and 4,152 m
  • 4-day Wagagai Peak Summit — the classic summit route; highest point in Uganda
  • 5-day Caldera & Hot Springs Traverse — full caldera crossing with Suam hot springs

All treks depart from Budadiri trailhead on the Ugandan side of the mountain.

When is the best time to trek Mount Elgon?

The best seasons are the dry periods: December–February and June–August. Trails are firmer, caldera views are clearer, and temperatures on the high moorlands are more stable.

Mount Elgon can be trekked year-round — the forest is lush and green during wetter months, and the caldera is especially dramatic after light rain. Avoid the heaviest rain months (March–May, October–November) for summit treks.

What is the highest point reached on an ETS trek?

Wagagai Peak at 4,321 metres (14,177 ft) is the highest point on Mount Elgon and the highest summit in Uganda. It is reached on the 3-day Wagagai & Masaba, 4-day Wagagai summit, and 5-day caldera traverse routes.

Mount Elgon's caldera is the largest ancient volcanic caldera in the world at roughly 40 km in diameter, making the landscape on the summit plateau truly unique.

Does Mount Elgon have hot springs?

Yes. The Suam hot springs sit inside the caldera near the Kenya-Uganda border at over 3,000 m elevation. They are the highlight of the 5-day caldera traverse and a genuinely rare experience — steaming geothermal pools in an ancient volcano above the clouds.

How do I book a trek with Elgon Trekking Services?

You can book through:

We recommend booking at least 2 weeks in advance for multi-day summit treks, especially during peak season. A deposit is required to confirm your reservation.

Do I need a permit to enter Mount Elgon National Park?

Yes. A Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) national park entry permit is required for all trekkers. Elgon Trekking Services arranges all UWA permits as part of your trek package — you do not need to apply separately.

Permit fees differ for foreign non-residents, East African residents, and Ugandan citizens. Current rates are included in our trek pricing.

What is included in ETS trek packages?

All multi-day ETS packages include:

  • UWA park entry permits
  • Licensed, UWA-certified guide(s)
  • All camping equipment (tents, sleeping mats, cooking gear)
  • Full meal service (breakfast, lunch, dinner)
  • Porter services (luggage carried by experienced local porters)
  • Emergency protocols and first-aid kit

You only need to bring personal clothing, a sleeping bag, and water bottles.

What currencies do you accept for payment?

We accept USD and UGX. Payment methods include cash, bank transfer, and mobile money (MTN/Airtel Uganda). Contact us to confirm payment details when booking.

How fit do I need to be to trek Mount Elgon?

Fitness requirements vary by route:

  • 1-day & 2-day: Moderate fitness — comfortable walking 4–6 hours
  • 3-day & 4-day: Good cardiovascular fitness — 6–10 hours of hiking per day on steep terrain
  • 5-day caldera traverse: Experienced hikers — the most demanding route

No technical climbing skills are required for any ETS route. If you can walk uphill for extended periods, you can summit Wagagai.

Is altitude sickness a risk on Mount Elgon?

Mild symptoms — headache, fatigue, reduced appetite — are possible above 3,000 m. At Wagagai Peak (4,321 m) moderate altitude sickness can affect some trekkers.

The risk is significantly lower than on Kilimanjaro or Rwenzori because ETS routes ascend gradually. All ETS guides are trained to recognise and respond to altitude sickness. If severe symptoms develop, descent is the immediate protocol. Consult your doctor before trekking if you have heart or respiratory conditions.

Are guides compulsory on Mount Elgon?

Yes. Uganda Wildlife Authority regulations require all trekkers inside Mount Elgon National Park to be accompanied by a licensed guide. Elgon Trekking Services provides UWA-certified, experienced guides who know the trails, wildlife, and weather patterns intimately. Porter services are also available and strongly recommended on multi-day treks.

Is Mount Elgon safe to trek?

Mount Elgon National Park on the Ugandan side is considered safe for trekking. ETS operates with licensed guides and maintains close coordination with UWA rangers. Emergency evacuation protocols are in place for all treks. Trekkers should follow guide instructions, respect weather conditions, and stay on marked trails.

Can children trek Mount Elgon?

Yes, with the right route:

  • 1-day forest walk: suitable for children aged 8 and above
  • 2-day Hunwick's Camp: suitable for children aged 12 and above
  • Summit treks (3–5 day): recommended for trekkers aged 16 and above due to altitude and duration
What should I pack for a Mount Elgon trek?

Essentials to bring:

  • Waterproof hiking boots with ankle support
  • Layered warm clothing (temperatures drop to 0–5 °C at night above 3,500 m)
  • Waterproof jacket and rain trousers
  • Sleeping bag rated to 0 °C (for overnight treks)
  • Headlamp with spare batteries
  • Sun protection — sunscreen, sunglasses, wide-brim hat
  • Water bottles or hydration pack (minimum 3 litres)
  • High-energy snacks and personal medications
  • Basic personal first-aid kit

ETS provides all camping equipment, meals, and porter services — you do not carry your own tent or cooking gear.

What are the camping conditions like on the mountain?

ETS uses established campsites at different altitude bands. Camps are equipped with quality tents, sleeping mats, a cook tent, and a dining shelter. Our experienced camp crew prepares hot meals each morning and evening. Toilet facilities are basic — long-drop latrines at some camps, cat-hole digging elsewhere (guides carry trowels and provide instruction).

Is there mobile phone signal on Mount Elgon?

Signal is available on the lower forest trails and at the Budadiri trailhead. Coverage becomes patchy above the forest line and is generally absent in the caldera and on the high moorlands. Inform family and friends of your itinerary before departure. ETS guides carry emergency communication devices on all multi-day treks.

What wildlife can I expect to see on Mount Elgon?

Mount Elgon National Park hosts a remarkable variety of wildlife:

  • Mammals: Forest elephants (often at the Elephant Platform salt lick), buffaloes, bushbucks, olive baboons, black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, forest hogs
  • Birds: Over 300 species including the rare Jackson's Francolin and Elgon Francolin — both endemic to Mount Elgon — plus sunbirds, hornbills, and raptors
  • Flora: Afro-alpine giant lobelia and giant groundsel in the caldera moorlands; giant heather forests; Elgon teak in the lower forest zone
Is Mount Elgon good for birding?

Yes — Mount Elgon is one of Uganda's premier birding destinations. With over 300 recorded species spanning forest, moorland, and afro-alpine zones, the mountain offers exceptional diversity. The endemic Elgon Francolin and Jackson's Francolin are the headline species. ETS offers dedicated birding treks with specialist guides.

What makes Mount Elgon unique compared to other African mountains?

Several things set Mount Elgon apart:

  • Largest ancient caldera in the world — roughly 40 km in diameter
  • Mineral-licking elephants — forest elephants excavate caves in the caldera walls to access mineral-rich salt, a behaviour found almost nowhere else on Earth
  • Four-country ancient volcanic landscape — the massif straddles Uganda and Kenya
  • Far fewer crowds than Kilimanjaro or Rwenzori, with trails often entirely to yourself
  • Hot springs at summit elevation — geothermal activity visible in the caldera
